Ladies and Gentlemen, as we promised before the Summer Season began, today we announce the results of our Quantity Competitions.

For the Competition for the Most Small Items Knit (in which we defined “Small Item” to mean an item that took at least 350 and no more than 700 yards to complete), we had 14 original competitors. Some of them were overcome by startitis, and thus did not record any finished objects, having been buried under a flurry of lacy goodness to the point where they just couldn’t choose one thing. (I so recognize this condition!!) Others were lured by the temptations of lace in other sizes, and found themselves finishing things that were either too large or too small to qualify for this competition. And, unfortunately, some were beset by life, and had to withdraw from the competition.

Of the remaining five, one was sidetracked by her prodigious output for the yardage competition. None-the-less, she registered a solid 6 items. Had she been allowed to count her yardage related entries for both projects, that number would have been higher…

Our runner up, with 10 items was marinemom (if only those dishcloths had been bigger, she’d have tied for first!).

And the winner, with 12 documented finished items in the small lace category?

   nolaboard! Congratulations nolaboard! You’ve won….

Next up in this awards “ceremony,” the heated competition for the most yards knit of yarn into lace in a single season. We started the season with 37 hopefuls. Some of them decided to stick to a single competition, instead of trying to work on high yardage counts AND churning out small items whose yardage would not count in this competition. Others found themselves lured away by cables, or by textured socks. And some, alas, were also beset by life. In the end, we have an even dozen competitors.

tinker came in third, with an impressive 6,893 yards of yarn converted into lace.

littlelena is our runner up. She managed to knit 8,246 yards of yarn into lace. For this amazing feat, she wins the second place prize of a kit for the delicate silk scarf “Whisp of Summer” .

and finally, our winner , who will be enjoying a

Congratulations! to our winners!

We hope you’ll post about what you’ve bought with your winnings!

The judged awards will take a bit more time. We seem to still be collecting nominations, and then we have to give our esteemed panel of judges time to consider the nominees.

One more post from the Admins this morning. First thing I want to thank all of the folks who have submitted nominations for our Judged Contests. But considering all of the fabulous posts and projects we’ve seen this summer, I think the quantity of nominations is a little low.

Here are the numbers as they stand now -

Lace Partnerships - 8 nominations

Lace Disasters - 2 nominations

Lace Extravaganza - 3 nominations

Lace on Display - 2 nominations

Lace on Vacation - 4 nominations

Viewers Choice Award - 2 nominations

All of the items that have been nominated are fabulous, but we would like to give our judges a few more nominations to work with.

So I and the other admins would like to encourage everyone to take a look at the archives and give someone a chance to win a prize. Don’t forget you can nominate yourself for everything but Viewers Choice Award.

I hope you all had a lovely Autumnal Equinox, and that you will enjoy the new season.

We’re taking a breather (sort of), and will be setting up for the Winter of Lace to start in December.

In the interim, we will be gathering all our data for the raffles and the contests and the competitions. We’ll sent up a page for the judges to view that has copies of the relevant posts or pictures on it. We’ll assemble the raffle lists and run the random generators… and with any luck, we’ll be announcing prizes without too much delay.

We’re also going to be contemplating how well this round went, and how we can change things to make them run more smoothly. We’ll happily entertain your recommendations (and are likely to put up some sort of poll to get more input).

We hope you’ll keep posting your lovely lace to keep us all inspired! And we will look forward to seeing you again for Winter of Lace!!!

Thanks for all the fun!

AND that I have remembered to tell you all now - hooray! I have however now got around to posting all the pix of said shawl (and a nice pretty one that I also knitted after finishing the QAL) on Flickr under Yarnspider.

Congrats to all who have also finished. The work I’ve seen has all been without exception, absolutely fabulous.

I started it last summer as Mystery Stole 3, actually as my first big lace project (so I could knit one before knitting my friend a wedding shawl) and it was going gangbusters! Until I got to the point where decisions had to be made.

First, there was a decision about length. I was knitting the shawl in fingering weight rather than laceweight, and there was an option to shorten the shawl. But it was not just stopping short of the end, it was taking a bunch of rows out of the middle of the end. So, later, when I changed my mind and decided to make it as originally designed (yes, it’s going to turn out freakishly long, but the shape is more pleasing), I had to frog down to a strategically placed lifeline and then reknit. Dang.

Second: the decision about whether to knit The Wing or not. When the clues got to this part, knitters went wild one way or the other. And I was conflicted. Asymmetry as such, I can handle (when I want to), and the wing itself was beautiful; but I really wasn’t sure about it. Did I knit ahead and trust the designer, or did I knit the symmetric variation, knitting two ends like the beginning, which is gorgeous? And how does one wear a one-winged shawl, anyway? (I know how, but it does limit its use….)

I ended up putting it aside and knitting my friend’s Wedding Pi shawl for her early November wedding. Then there was holiday knitting. Then assorted birthdays. And it was just for me, anyway. Things for me tend to drop down to the bottom of the list.

Well, it was too pretty just to be a UFO indefinitely. So I resurrected it for Summer of Lace and Ravelympics (it was less than half done, because I had to rip back, and my plan was to knit a second half like the first, for the symmetrical variation).

I got a lot done: but hampered by a bad thumb that really impeded knitting (particularly purling), I had to put this aside for the last couple weeks (leading to a No Purl Lace Project that I just posted!), otherwise I think it coulda been a contender for a FO!

Here’s Part Deux:

Below is an older picture of the first half, not quite ‘done’, but pinned out so you can see the gorgeous pattern and the beading. Once Part Deux is the same length as Part Un, then there is a fancy connecting part and Swan Lake will finally be complete. I just hope it’s this year still…..it’s a point of pride now!
