Heartland lace shawl

No Gravatar

I finally finished my Heartland Lace Shawl by Evelyn Clark. I don’t know why, but once the Olympics were over it was a real slog to get this done. I knit this shawl as a tribute to my dad who passed away last May. He loved buffaloes and this is knit of 100% American Buffalo down which I hand spun. The pattern is supposed to be buffalo tracks and a river. This shawl is fairly large (78×34.5) and very warm. 609 yds.

The Saigon Scarf (and other knitting)

2 ply Madder Dyed BFLbirdseye laceThe Saigon ScarfThe Saigon ScarfThe Saigon Scarf (badcatdesigns)

So I’ve been spinning a lot this year as one of my goals is to knit more lace projects with my own hand spun yarns. I purchased some beautiful Madder dyed BFL from “A Verb For Keeping Warm” and spun it with the Majacraft Rose using the lace flyer/fat core bobbin combination. I am using the yarn to knit a stole from a Japanese book “Vintage Knitting in Tradition” and the pattern is captioned “Cloches a travers les feuilles” which translates into “Your guess is as good as mine!” I’m using US 0 needles.  Below you can see that I have finished The Saigon Scarf from badcatdesigns using hand spun lace weight yarn I made from fiber purchased from Spritely Goods. It came out pretty though my pictures don’t do it justice.  I only have 4 more rows for my International Shawl and though it is not for competition or for raffle, I will post when done since the Seasons of Lace is keeping me on my goal of finishing :-)

Handspun Misty Garden Scarf

Well, I frogged my first scarf due to not really liking how it was turning out. So, I have spent a couple of weeks spinning instead, to get some yarns to use for our Seasons of Lace. I decided to try a new wool for me - Wensleydale.

Here is the roving I started with. I bought it from Lisa Souza in the Petroglyph colorway.Wensleydale top

This is my finished 2-ply handspun. I was amazed at the transformation of top to handspun.Wensleydale Handspun

I chose the Misty Gardern pattern from Scarf Style for my handspun. I wasn’t quite able to capture the warm of the yarn in this photo, but it gives you an idea of how my scarf is progressing. I really like it!

Progress

International Shawl borderThe Saigon ScarfSo I’m making progress on the Saigon Scarf by badcatdesigns. It’s made with hand spun yarn, fiber from Spritely goods in colorway “Palo Verde” 2 ply spun on a Majacraft Rose using the lace flier and fat-core bobbins.  It has merino, alpaca, firestar and angelina for sparkle.  This pattern has beads knit in and is quite pretty. I’m about 1/3 way done. I’ve also made progress on the border for the “International Shawl” which is to be a gift for a co-worker who is going to retire. The border has estonian leaves at the bottom and Madiera and Diamond lace at the top. Now for the edging.

Palo Verde colorway from Spritely GoodsThe Saigon Scarf up to chart # 1The Saigon Scarf (beads)

For the Ravelry group “One Shawl To Rule Them All”, I’m knitting something different than the rest of the “Elven” group, but we are allowed to diverge. It’s called “The Saigon Scarf” by Badcatdesigns and is a free pattern on Ravelry.  I’m using a lace weight yarn I spun from fibers I puchased at  Spritely Goods in the “Palo Verde” colorway. It’s a combination of merino, alpaca, firestar and angelina with beads for accent. I’m using size 3.25 mm needles or US 3.

What I’ve been up to, lace-wise

I’ve started the Wakame Lace Tunic from the latest Interweave Knits, using Claudia Linen Lace (Copper Pennies) and 3.5mm needles. Loving it.

And I may now talk about & show pictures of the scarf I knit from alpaca/silk handspun for an exchange organized by a friend of mine. You can see more at my projects page on Ravelry.

Edited to insert the flickr address for my scarf pic, rather than the uploaded image from my computer. Sorry about that.
