Is/has anyone else knitting/knitted/fitted a lace garment?

Hi all,

I posted this in the lace knitter’s forum, but haven’t gotten any responses…      :(   so, apologies if you’ve already seen it.

Maybe someone here can give me a little direction…

Hi anyone,

Soooo many people are making lace shawls, scarves, wraps, etc. and they are all quite gorgeous & I lust after them, but I’m just not a “shawl person”! at least not yet…grin…I think it’ll take making one for myself…So I’m knitting a lace vest Rose Lace Vest from A Gathering of Lace.

The first size of the given instructions would drown me, so I’m flying by the seat of my pants & trying to make it to fit me. It’s written for L (45), to XL, to XXL.

So, basically, the pattern starts at the back shoulder, you knit down to the armholes, put those stitches on hold, then pick up stitches on either side of the shoulders & knit down the fronts, then join & knit the rest.

I’ve struggled through & achieved most of the front increases in pattern (3 left to go) for the V-neck cardigan-type shaping, changed considerably from the written instructions, which if I’d followed would have put the center front joining somewhere around my waist, I think. (The given length of the vest is 27”, and I want mine to be about 22”.)

So, I held off doing the back increases for the underarm shaping & actually didn’t do as much of the back as I probably needed to do to get to the underarm increases, because I wanted to be able to “fit” as I went along. Now, it’s coming down to decision time, and I’m not sure just what to do. At present, I’m knitting the fronts & back at the same time, and I’m not sure how much I should be stretching it to decide whether it’s long enough to start the underarm increases front & back.

How does one decide just how long a piece of lace knitting for a garment is??? When you’re measuring a piece that says it oughta be 8 or 9 inches long (the back length), do you measure it just patted flat or blocked to within an inch of its life??? Likely, somewhere in between, right? I’m just really trying to avoid abusing this cashmere single any more than I already am/have…I’ll put in a lifeline on the purl row before starting the underarm increases, but any lace-garment-maker’s wisdom would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Diane

This might just teach me for being cocky…

in my last post I was all proud saying how well it was all going. I’d done 2 pattern repeats and all was looking great. Since then I’ve done another 2 bringing me up to 4 in total.

As I was knitting the 3rd I kept looking at my ball and going mmmm I don’t think I’m going to have enough to do the 21 and a half repeats called for in the pattern, but it doesn’t matter, mine will just be a little shorter. I have 2 skeins (they are the only 2 skeins of this colourway ever, can’t get any more no matter how much I beg) however many I get done in the first one I’ll remember and do that many in the 2nd.

Well I’ve done the 4th repeat, and I’m starting to get bad feelings, I just can’t quite see how to make this big enough. It’s 17 inches unblocked, and if I stretch it out it becomes 23 inches.  The pattern calls for ~800 metres lace to light fingering weight yarn, I have 840m of light fingering yarn. The pictures below show what I’m on about, and how little yarn is left of the first skein. Loads of you are more experienced than I am, is this going to work, will I end up with something of a usable length when I block it properly, or should I stop now?Is this enough yarn?UnblockedFoxglove shawl

(PS I know needles aren’t usual blocking tools but I have no idea which box my pins are in, I improvised with the only sharp pointy things I could find!)

learning the photo game

Well, I figured out how to get photos onto Flickr, so they are available, but I can’t seem to get them to hook up to this site, even though I’m following the directions as carefully as I can. Any ideas?

I did cast on a warm-up project today, and am about to wind another ball of yarn for the mystery shawl. the first clue came out today, but I am doing a test swatch, so the real thing will count for this KAL.

If I click on:

Create a Summer of Lace Post

I get an error and can’t post. But if I click on site admin, I can post. I probably shouldn’t be able to get into the site admin as just a participant, no? But then, I wouldn’t have been able to do what I’m doing now!

May I ask, please, why we aren’t to put pictures in posts?

Alternatively, how would one link to the groups flickr page?

Thanks,

Diane

Looking for newbie pattern suggestions

I’m excited to participate in Seasons of Lace KAL - I haven’t done a KAL before.  I’m not much on planning, but think it would probably be a good idea to have some ideas before starting, since I can lose 4 hours on ravelry without noticing.  So, I’m looking for some lovely lace sock pattern recommendations, and I feel quite certain that some of you out there have favorites :)

Also, I think I’d really like to make a shawl-type thing, but I’m in Louisiana, and it’s hot, and wearing shawls aren’t really my thing, and it’s hot, and not too many people around here wear shawls either so it probably wouldn’t make a great gift.  I made a “Leafy Lace Stole” about a year ago, and it has sat neatly folded on the back of my couch ever since.  Any suggestions on shawl-like (from a knitting perspective) but not shawl -like (from a wearing perspective) articles of clothing?

Can’t wait to see what you guys think!

Just found this group & am really excited to be a part of this! Thanks!!! I really like the fact that anyone can join/enter & you can work on anything you like. What a GREAT idea! You guys rock!

I just did a swatch last night for the project I’d like to do this summer: Rose Lace Vest from A Gathering of Lace. If I get a chance, I’ll photo the swatch before & after washing/blocking. Only problem is the pattern is written too large for me, so I’ll have to do some figuring before getting started…which seems to fit in just right with the time-frame here. Kismet! When are we “allowed” to cast on?

Thanks for letting me join.
