Progress, Disaster, and Caston

I completed the latest Forest Canopy Shawl, used  440 yds and decided to block it aggressively in an attempt to get it large enough for myself. Well apparently I missed the class on wet blocking silk.. WAAAAAAAAA

I think I can fix it but I am so angry with it right now we are not even on speaking terms.

In the meantime I have cast on the Elm Row by Ann Hanson and will hopefully be casting on the Goddessknits July Mystery shawl later today as the first clue is due today.

  • Ouchies.

There was a class on wet-blocking silk? What happens when you aggressively wet-block silk, does it break? And does that happen if it’s a silk blend?

  • This was a silk blend Classic Elite Silky Alpaca. when it began to dry a thread broke :(
no there was not a class, ( well maybe there was, I wouldn’t know since I wasn’t there) LOL.

Apparently there is an article on knitty.com regarding blocking the various fibers and you should not wet block silk.

  • How horrible for you! I hope you can do a “fix” on it. I did not know we were not supposed to wet block silk. I’m knitting on some silk right now and after seeing what happned to you I’m wondering what it is I’m supposed to do with it when I’m done. I’ve read that it can dry stiff and has to be “whacked” against something to make it soft again but I had not heard that it can’t be wet blocked. Maybe a “gentle” wet blocking?
