Sad, sad, sad!

I had to FROG the shawl!!!!!  I noticed (after 17 repeats!) that there was suspiciously little yarn left, and the size of the shawl was not something I liked, so, after thinking a bit and reading the instructions i noticed that the whole darn thing was made with smaller needles than called for !!!! I almost died!  I thought long and hard while I drove to my weekend vacation, and decided to frog the thing and start again, because I wouldn´t have used it if it was too small.  So….. I´ll start again,…. tomorrow.  sigh….

My beads finally arrived from ebay!!  (I just ordered last week…. but it seems like forever!!)  I’ve now cast on my Summer Mystery Shawl from Goddess Knits.  I’m using a fingering weight ice blue from Sarah’s Yarns and some really great dark blue beads!!  My shawl ADD is really kicked in now!!  I’m in hog heaven!!

What’s your line?

I’ve knit a couple of lace items with fingering weight yarn and I’m not really sure I care for the fabric. It is not light enough to be lace and it is not heavy enough to just be something with a lace pattern. I really like things like tops and sweaters that have a good portion of lace in them, but for shawls I think I really prefer a lace weight yarn to keep it light and airy. How do you feel about fingering weight lace?

Today’s Progress

My Grandson was over for the better part of the day so I didn’t get as much knitting finished as yesterday. Instead we spent the day playing and eating cookies :)  I’m hoping to finish a sock tomorrow.

Just wondering–I’ve been coming across them, without a definition, in my lace reading, and figured one of you could give me a quick answer.

Thanks

More Sponsors! More Prizes! More Lace!

As you may or may not know, I’m in the midst of an annual road trip to my mom’s in Maine. We’ve arrived safely after a week of driving and visiting and generally having a good time.

While I’ve been playing and driving, folks have been continuing to lend their support to our KAL.

Twisted Fibers has joined us as a sponsor (if you’ve not popped over to the Sponsors page, you really ought to do so. I’ll wait while you look). Please do take a look, and shop appropriately.

Meanwhile, my most recent hostess has also joined in, sending me along with a lovely prize . Again… if you’ve not looked at the Prize page lately… hop on over and drool a bit. I’ll wait.

I’ve been sneaking in a bit of knitting…. and even made some beading progress last night after the final leg of driving. (That four hour stint felt like it took as long as the eight hour leg…).

This is a bit of Willow, resting on Chrysopolis’ chart.

Willow beads

I know it looks like there’s a bit of uneven-ness in the beading.  I’d thought about beading EVERY decrease in this mesh, but decided that in the end, that would not only be too crowded, but I’d run out of beads.  Since I bought the beads at Stitches over 2 years ago, I’m pretty sure that more that match would be more of a challenge than I’m up to…  It WILL make sense once the section is finished though.  Really.  It will.

Besides, this section represents a running stream.  We can’t expect water to look uniform, can we?

Is/has anyone else knitting/knitted/fitted a lace garment?

Hi all,

I posted this in the lace knitter’s forum, but haven’t gotten any responses…      :(   so, apologies if you’ve already seen it.

Maybe someone here can give me a little direction…

Hi anyone,

Soooo many people are making lace shawls, scarves, wraps, etc. and they are all quite gorgeous & I lust after them, but I’m just not a “shawl person”! at least not yet…grin…I think it’ll take making one for myself…So I’m knitting a lace vest Rose Lace Vest from A Gathering of Lace.

The first size of the given instructions would drown me, so I’m flying by the seat of my pants & trying to make it to fit me. It’s written for L (45), to XL, to XXL.

So, basically, the pattern starts at the back shoulder, you knit down to the armholes, put those stitches on hold, then pick up stitches on either side of the shoulders & knit down the fronts, then join & knit the rest.

I’ve struggled through & achieved most of the front increases in pattern (3 left to go) for the V-neck cardigan-type shaping, changed considerably from the written instructions, which if I’d followed would have put the center front joining somewhere around my waist, I think. (The given length of the vest is 27”, and I want mine to be about 22”.)

So, I held off doing the back increases for the underarm shaping & actually didn’t do as much of the back as I probably needed to do to get to the underarm increases, because I wanted to be able to “fit” as I went along. Now, it’s coming down to decision time, and I’m not sure just what to do. At present, I’m knitting the fronts & back at the same time, and I’m not sure how much I should be stretching it to decide whether it’s long enough to start the underarm increases front & back.

How does one decide just how long a piece of lace knitting for a garment is??? When you’re measuring a piece that says it oughta be 8 or 9 inches long (the back length), do you measure it just patted flat or blocked to within an inch of its life??? Likely, somewhere in between, right? I’m just really trying to avoid abusing this cashmere single any more than I already am/have…I’ll put in a lifeline on the purl row before starting the underarm increases, but any lace-garment-maker’s wisdom would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Diane

Weekend knitting

No Gravatar

First things first. I amused myself over the weekend. Saturday morning I finished up clue 2 of my mystery shawl. I inserted another lifeline. This lifeline was much easier to insert with the circular needles. I was pretty proud of myself. I printed out clue 3 and proceeded to knit. I knew I was not going to get the third clue completed over the weekend, but I wanted to get as much done as I possible could. I got about three or four rounds into the clue and guess what I noticed!

Lineline goof!

Oh yeah! I inserted the lifeline through my stitch markers! Oh the humanity! I felt like such a newbie! I just shook my head and stared at it for about 5 minutes. I put the lifeline through all of the stitch markers! Clearly I was not thinking when I did this. I told my hubby about it, and his response was to cut the stitch markers! Gasp! NEVER! I ended up taking the lifeline out, but not before taking a picture to document my goof! Oh well. Maybe my next lifeline will go much better. LOL!

I’m not quite half way through the third clue. But I think this clue is going to be the one clue that I don’t have mistakes in. I am definately going to have to cast on another one of these shawls after I am done with this one.

Start of clue 3

I did make some progress on my Arctic Diamonds stole as well. I completed the first section of the chart. I am pleased to see the start of the diamond pattern on it.

Section 1 complete

I really think this one is going to turn out real good. I tried to knit the first row of the second section, but I attempted this while watch Jean Claud Van Dam in BloodSport. Yeah, I got through 2 of the chart repeats and decided that I am going to have to unknit them and redo them. Stitchs are off. LOL. Jean Claud is too much of a distraction apparently.

I’m really excited to see how both projects are going to turn out. I probably won’t be able to tell much on the mystery shawl until after it is blocked. I’m really enjoying all the pictures everyone else is posting. Keep up the good knitting guys!

~~Happy Knitting!~~

Well, I learned some important things over the past week.  First, never attempt to knit lace while sleep-deprived and stressed out at a hospital.  Things will not go well.  Thankfully, I caught myself before I really screwed things up.  Also, my mom will need me at the precise moment I’m trying to do something complicated, and old Dr Who is the perfect show to knit lace to.

There has been progress (my scarf is over a foot long, and I’ve done 7.5 repeats of the shawl pattern out of 11 total), but pictures will not be forthcoming until tonight.  I like the shawl pattern to knit, but I’m not sure I like the look of it.  Maybe blocking will make it look better?  I have my next project all lined up and ready to go, so I’m hoping I get something done soon.

Hope everyone else had a good and productive weekend!
